So I've seen it talked about a dozen times - everyone says OBR10 and no RAID5/6 - but can we quantify the reasons?
I have a 12TB Array - 12 1TB drives. I sure like the idea of getting 10 usable TB out of it rather than 6TB!
So that said, can someone put into perspective the real performance differences so I can make an educated decision on which is better for me?
Stripe RAIDs (RAID0, 5 and 6 and 4) shine with big writes only. With parity you'll get not only no performance increase but also performance degradation on partial stripe write. So if you don't run log-structured file system (say WAFL) performance will suck badly.
P.S. And don't forget about good backup.
